Origin Stories: Pen

Does is ever cross your mind, how this interesting piece of work came into existence? , I am sure as soon as we came to our senses we saw people using it. At the age of three/four, we started creating our own piece of modern art with it, crazy swirls, elliptical circle and much more such pieces which were either on the paper, newspaper or on the walls of our bedroom.

You have almost used this invention for 25% of your time of childhood & teenage self and even more when you started your graduation.

There was a time in my childhood when I never use to refill the pen which I have been using, I just use to collect the empty shell in the box and buy a new one for my use. One fine Sunday I along with my friend tried calculating the money which I spent buying them throughout the six years of my time and you won’t believe me but it crossed 30K INR.

So today we will try to learn few normal facts & the origin of this invention Pen.

What is a Pen?
I don’t need to answer this, do I?
An instrument for writing or drawing with ink, typically consisting of a metal nib or ball, or a nylon tip, fitted into a metal or plastic holder.

The word Pen was derived from a Latin word Penna which means feather.
We have already been aware of the modern pen which we have used in our day to day life, we will try to know a little bit about the historic types of Pen.

Where it started?

The Ancient Egyptian innovated the reed pen and used that to write on scrolls made up of papyrus. The writer Steven Roger Fischer suggests in his book History of writing that the recent findings at Saqqara prove that the reed pen must have been used for as long as First Dynasty (i.e. 3000 BC).

These Reed pens were then replaced with Quills as soon as the writing surface papyrus was replaced by animal skins.
Quill pens were used in the 18th century to write and sign the Constitution of United States in 1787.
The copper nib was found in the ruins of Pompeii which proves that these pens were into existence in the year 79 as well.

Below is the brief year of the discovery of the pen which will be useful to you.

The current scenario of Pen is like they act as status symbol as well,
